I live in Halikko, Finland together with my wife and our two children. I do software development both as a day job and as a hobby. Aside free software projects I spend most of my spare time with my family. I also read about various subjects, mostly non-fiction nowadays but I have read lot of sci-fi and fantasy as well.
On a popular level I am interested in many fields of science and technology and I like to read popular science magazines and books. Computer science and astronomy are among the highest ranking topics for me. In contrast to technology I also enjoy nature, especially walking in a forest with a camera. Nature conservation is an important topic for me.
I have been using various kinds of free software, also known as open source software, almost exclusively since 1995. Free software movement is about freedom, not about price. Earlier I merely consumed free software and promoted it to other people but lately I have had a better opportunity to produce free software myself. Having used numerous free software products both at home and at work I have learned to appreciate the benefits of free software and open collaboration for both commercial and non-commercial activities. I have also learned the weaknesses of free software and try to seek for improvement on those parts.
In addition to software development I am interested in photography. I like to take snapshot level photographs of various subjects. I am not usually planning ahead, just carrying a camera with me when, for example, walking in a forest together with the family. I tend to take couple of snapshots whenever I see something interesting. Occasionally I even manage to capture the subject the way I intended. Documenting events and capturing memories is also important for me.
